Sydney University handed fourth-placed Dandenong a surprise 77-67 road loss on Saturday afternoon on the back of Natalie Stafford's 26-point haul.
The Rangers enjoyed a buffer of nine points at the half and a narrow one-point margin with a quarter to play, but the Flames finished strongly thanks to Stafford and Katie-Rae Ebzery.
Ebzery scored seven of her 18 points in the final period and made 8-of-11 free throws to push the home side into the lead late on.
Stafford went 10-for-16 from the floor and added three rebounds and two assists in the win, which brought the Flames back to .500 on the season (7-7).
Dandenong, which has a 7-6 record, was led by Stephanie Cumming's 17 points, while Lauren King and Tracy Gahan both had 11.
In Saturday's other clash, the second-ranked Boomers (10-2) had no trouble dispatching the lowly AIS in Bulleen, sending the visitors crashing to their 14th defeat of the year in a lopsided 94-38 affair.
Opals centre Liz Cambage capped off the night with an all-round performance of 24 points, six rebounds and five blocked shots.
The only area of the clash where AIS held its own was on the glass, with Sara Blicavs reeling in a game-high 10 rebounds to go with a team-best nine points.
